Activities has remained at standstill at a sugar factory in Riat, Ndhiwa Sub-county Homabay county after the workers held demonstrations and closed the factory’s gates. This happened due to what they said that one of them was beaten to death by one of the security officers manning the factory end of last week.
The workers are demanding justice for their late fellow who was driving a waste collecting truck whom they say was killed on Saturday night under unknown circumstances. They say that the fellow was killed at the company’s premises after being linked to the theft of a certain mettalic tool belonging to the company.
The workers say that the man was killed by the security men and later his body given to police officers from Ndhiwa police station who later took his body to the police cell.
However, the company’s general manager David Okoth has denied the claims saying that the guy was arrested by the police after the watchmen found him in possession of a metal which was believed he stole from the factory. Okoth said that police reports indicate that the man committed suicide using his jacket at Ndhiwa police cell.
Ndhiwa police commander Robert Aboki said that the man hanged himself on Saturday night at the police cell and investigations are underway.
