Fishermen on Wednesday were shocked to fish out six mortar bombs during their fishing expedition in Lake Victoria. According to Director of Criminal Investigations DCI, the fishermen thought they had gotten one of their biggest catch until they pulled out the explosives.

The fishermen were mesmerized by the unusual weight of their nets and they presumed that they had landed a bigger catch and started pulling out the nets and were surprised to realize that they had caught a huge mettalic box instead of nile pearch (mbuta).

On opening the box, they were surprised even more to discover six 60mm mortar bombs inside the box. Two fishermen jumped into the water with fear that the bombs would explode. Three others rowed to the shore and reported the incident to Isaiah Ouko who is the Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairman.

Ouko reported the matter to DCI detectives in Mbita who in turn notified their Bomb Disposals and Hazardous Materials counterparts in Kisumu who rushed to Mbita and took the explosives.
