Farmers Urged to Embrace Sorghum Farming

Farmers in Nyakach and Kisumu County at large have been urged to jump into sorghum farming. Lower Nyakach Women Traders SACCO secretary Mary nyango has said that sorghum has a good market and those farming it have better income than other farmers. She also said that it has nutrients that help in building the body and it can also be used in manufacturing other products which can also be sold and bring income.

Mary said that as a SACCO, they have come up with an initiative of teaching farmers about sorghum farming in conjunction with Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture. Speaking after a meeting with sorghum farmers from Nyong’ong’a in lower Nyakach, she urged the county goverment of Kisumu to support sorghum farmers.

Michael Odhiambo who is a sorghum farmer urged his fellow farmers to change the crops they plant as he said that sorghum is not easily affected by drought and can do well in Nyakach.

The county government of Kisumu has been urging farmers in the county to plant sorghum due to the presence of an alcohol manufacturing company in the county which can buy sorghum at a better price.
