Maranda High School students have to undergo a mandatory test before accessing the school compound. the students who reported back to school on Tuesday from their December holiday had to undergo a drug test at the school’s main gate before get into the school compound.
This came after the Ministry of Education gave an order for students in all schools that experienced arson cases to undergo a test to determine whether they have traces of drug abuse in their blood stream.
The school principal Mr. Edwin Namachanja confirmed that they are testing each and every student as they arrive at the school, and they have also urged parents to sign an agreement allowing the test to be done on their children at any time it will be required, as he stated that the test is being conducted by the Government Chemist through NACADA.
Siaya County education director Nelson Sifuna is not meant to intimidate the students that will be found with drug traces in their blood stream, but to help them by taking them to appropriate rehabilitation centres to help them stop using drugs. He went ahead to state that 99% of parents do not know that their children are abusing drugs, as he said that rehabilitation fees will be taken care of by parents. He finished by thanking parents for accepting their children to undergo the test.
