National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) officers in Homabay on Tuesday arrested 20 individuals who were caught using polythene bags which were banned in the country to wrap commodities while selling. This came after the officers conducted a random search in Homabay town and Rodi centre.
Speaking to journalists in Homabay town moments after the search, Homabay County environmental director Josiah Nyandoro said that they will carry on with the random searches to ensure that the ban imposed on the use of plastic bags is obeyed and those who disobey the ban are arrested and charged.
He went ahead to give a stern warning to netizens to always follow rules to the latter to ensure that they don’t find themselves on the wrong side of the law, as he said that the 20 will be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
His sentiments were echoed by NEMA national director, who said that apart from the use of the plastic bags, the biggest concern is the cleanliness of Lake Victoria must be maintained.
