President William Ruto has suggested the prospect of exclusively assigning governorship positions nationwide to female candidates.

Speaking on Tuesday during the official opening of the second Homa Bay County International Investment Conference, President Ruto opined that two out of the three State-commissioned special economic zones were exceeding expectations under the leadership of female Governors.

Ruto, while noting that the suggestion was mooted to him by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, highlighted that the achievements in the special economic zones underscored the ability of women to excel in such roles.

“Of the three special economic zones issued to counties, two of them are from counties where women are Governors. In fact, Kimani Ichung’wah has told me we should seriously consider making these seat of governors a women seat…maybe women can do a better job,” said President Ruto.

He similarly indicated a willingness by the Kenya Kwanza government to accommodate a 30 percent female representation in the Council of Governors (CoG) as per a request made by CoG Chair and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

“I don’t know how Constitutional that is but Council of Governors (CoG) Chair Anne Waiguru has requested for 30 percent (female representation). I think the men were willing to consider the whole governors but since you have asked for thirty percent we will go for that,” said the Head of State.

President Ruto subsequently expressed support for female Governors nationwide, further stating that they are doing a tremendous job of carrying out their mandates.

“I want to tell the G7 our great women Governors that you have my support as you do the wonderful job that you are already doing. I want to encourage others, if you have a chance to elect a woman Governor, don’t squander that chance, elect a woman Governor,” he said.
