The chiefJustice Martha Koome has said that the judiciary will support the government agenda of planting trees to help in mitigating climate change.
According to her they will achieve this through a slogan known as “green justice” whereby they will give sentences to petty offenders that involve community service where the offenders will be made to plant trees in designated areas and also help in cleaning government offices.
This will be made possible by the land and environment court which she says has started spear heading tree planting in the judiciary and has set aside the number of trees to be planted. She said these while leading Nanyuki law court staffs in tree planting exercise which was conducted at Mukima secondary school.
Madam koome said this will help the government in achieving its agenda of making sure that by the year 2032 the nation shall have planted 15 billion trees to help in mitigating the effects of climate change.
She echoed on working with county governments in supervising this to make sure it’s achieved.
Tree planting drive is one of the Kenya kwanza government agenda in ensuring that the environment is well preserved to avoid further damages by climate change like that being experienced now in the country where floods has caused havoc in various homes across the country including people losing lives.
