5 Most Influential Female Politicians in the Gusii Region

Politics has for long been dominated by men but in recent days women have joined the arena facing men’s head on.

Below are the five most influential female politicians from the Kisii region.

Donya Dorris Toto Aburi

Donya Dorris is a seasoned politician who currently serves as the Kisii County Women Representative. She won the seat during the 2022 general election beating the then-incumbent Women Rep Janet Ong’era of ODM with more than 120K ballots

Donya is credited for having helped Egesa FM which debuted in 2006 grow rapidly due to her exceptional gift of the gab.

Esther Anyieni Okenyuri

Esther Okenyuri is currently a nominated senator in the National Assembly. Okenyuri was picked to replace Soipan Tuya after he was appointed to become a Cabinet Secretary in 2022. The 30-year-old was one of President Ruto’s key campaigners during the 2022 general elections and is the founder of the Kisii Youth Alliance. Okenyuri is one of the most promising young female leaders in Gusii region.

Irene Nyakerario Mayaka

Popularly known as Renee, Mayaka is a nominated Member of Parliament from the ODM Party. Mayaka who is a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga is the founder of the popular lobby group Daughters of Raila. She came into the limelight when she competed for the title of Madam President; a reality TV show that aired on KTN. Mayaka is among the top contenders for the office of Woman Parliamentarian in 2027.

Millicent Nyaboke Omanga

Millicent Nyaboke Omanga popularly known as Mama Miradi is another influential politician from the Gusii region. Omanga unsuccessfully vied for the Nairobi Women Rep seat in the 2022 general election under the UDA party but lost to ODM’s Esther Passaris. She was nominated to become a CAS but the positions were ruled unconstitutional by the High Court.

Gloria Orwoba

Gloria Orwoba is another nominated Senator courtesy of the UDA party. Orwoba was interested in the Bobasi parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election but was asked by the President to step down for another candidate in exchange for an automatic nomination.

The nominated MP is renowned for her support of menstrual education.
