Lake Victoria Drowning in Water Hyacinth,Lwanda Beach Fishermen lament

Fishermen from Lwanda beach in Nyatike Sub County have called on the government of Kenya in collaboration with the department of fisheries to come out and assist them in uprooting the water hyacinth which has now blocked various beaches along the lake.

Led by the Lwanda beach management unit chairman Kennedy Ochieng they said that for several months they have raised complaints over the presence of the water hyacinth in the area but no action has been taken.

While speaking to press in Lwanda beach, the fishermen said that normal fishing activities along the lake has now stopped fearing that most of them will now starve given also the effects of Covid-19 pandemic which has now affected their economy hence calling on the government to come up with a lasting solution to the matter as they had done to other beaches in Kisumu county and Homa-bay for their benefit.

They at the same time showed fear of contracting diseases related to lack of hygiene saying most of them now use and drink dirty water calling on the local leaders also to come out and help them from the predicament they are now going through.
