A TWEET CLAIMING THAT SCHOOLS WILL OPEN ON 19TH OCTOBER IS MISLEADING.

Schools will only resume on October  if the government adopts a proposals made by the committee which is chaired by Sarah Ruto from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)

The committee recommends that only form four and form three students as well as class eight, seven and grade four pupils should report on October 19th   .

“We have not said schools are reopening. We shall give dates after appropriate Government machinery has gone through. I think it is about time to call our children back to schools’, said CS Magoha while speaking to the press on Monday.

Due to disruption of term dates, the committee recommends that the school calendar be revised to allow the year to begin in June instead of the usual January-to-November cycle.

If the government adopts the proposal learners will not repeat classes as had been announced earlier.

Other senior education stakeholders have proposed to reorganize the academic calendar such that the second term starts in October and ends in November, while the third term starts in January and ends in March.

Should the 2021 calendar year start in May or early June, Hundreds of thousands of children scheduled to join Early Child Development Education classes will be delayed for half a year

The proposals come five months after Magoha commissioned the committee  in May and charged it with exploring the best possible strategies of restoring normalcy in Education.

In early June, the CS maintained that schools would remain shut until the Ministry of Health provided guidance through the National Emergency Response Committee on Covid-19.
