Headteacher Arrested For Child Labour

Headteacher at Rhodi-Kopany Township Primary School in Homabay town constituency, Homabay County was arrested for employing a nine year old girl as his househelp.
Reports indicate that the girl was studying in a school in Migori, but left schooling in May last year while in class two, before she was taken by the accused teacher and employed to take care of his one year old child.
The teacher was arrested after his neighbours became curious of why the child was not going to school while her peers were going. The officer in charge of Children’s rights in Homabay town sub-county Joseph Otieno confirmed the arrest of the teacher, stating that his office had already received wind on the same from the neighbours.
He said that after being informed of what was happening, he coordinated with Rhodi police officers who raided the teacher’s house and arrested him. He went ahead to explain that the teacher lied to the child’s parents that the girl was going to study in his school but to the contrary, took her as a nanny.
The headteacher was arraigned in court before Senior Magistrate Ruth Maloba at the Homabay Law Courts and was left free on a Ksh. 50,000 cash bail, as the case will be heard again on 31st January.
