Fake: Photo of Raila Odinga Dressed Like Traditional Magician Fabricated

Written by on May 9, 2023

A photo of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga dressed like people performing magical incantations which is doing rounds on social media has been altered.

The image was fabricated to make it look like the former Prime Minister was doing something fishy while he was out of the country in late April.

The fake photo was posted on May 2, 2023, by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on his social media platforms.

“I managed to get a photo of the place you (Raila Odinga) recently visited while you were away,” Sonko captioned.

A reverse image search on the photo indicated that it was altered and Raila’s face added to it. The original image was published on March 2018 in an article about the Donsow Strolling Quay of Arts which was published by ThisFabTrek. The article featured a photo of the chief of the Donsow hunters and lessons passed from master to discipline from generation to generation.

The Donwos are originally from Western Burkina Faso and are known as an initiatory society that focuses on hunting.  Their esoteric teachings are based on knowledge of the character of animals, the healing power of plants and the learning of magical incantations.

The Donsows are also feared and respected in western Africa, as therapists who drive out bad spirits.
