Velji Jayaben Jayeshikumar, the widow of the late Indian businessman Jayesh Kumar, has been detained by authorities for a period of 14 days following her arrest and subsequent appearance at the Kibera Law Courts.
Kumar is reported to have gone missing on Valentines Day before her husband was discovered in Lukenya where it was doused in acid.
Jayaben’s arrest on Wednesday followed investigations that showed her communication with one of the four other suspects in police custody on the day her husband was killed.
When she was arraigned before Magistrate Irene Kahuya, detectives said they required more time to complete investigations of her possible involvement.
Despite the defense’s plea, the court granted the prosecution’s request, extending Jayaben’s detention to 14 days.
Magistrate Kahuya remarked, “Jayaben is alleged to have been involved in the murder plot after phone analysis revealed her communication with one of the four suspects who were arrested and arraigned at Kibera Law Courts on February 19th.”
“It is purported that she solicited assistance from the suspect in disciplining and tormenting her husband due to marital disagreements… The suspect complied and enlisted others to carry out the scheme,” Kahuya added.
Video footage reportedly captured Jayaben alongside her husband and son on Valentine’s Day morning, with allegations surfacing of her communication with the perpetrators to execute their plan, and subsequent regret upon learning of her husband’s death, as the intended outcome was purportedly non-lethal intimidation.
As investigations proceed, authorities are yet to conduct DNA tests on the remains recovered from the crime scene, presumed to belong to Kumar. Additionally, scrutiny is directed towards verifying the immigration status of two suspects of Indian origin, with all five individuals slated to undergo mental health evaluations prior to any formal charges.
