A 37–year–old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a youthful woman in Mwala, Machakos County.

The suspect, 37, was smoked out of his hideout within Wamunyu Township in the Mwala subcounty on Friday.

Mwala subcounty police commander Nancy Jerobon said the suspect was arrested at the Wamunyu trading centre following a tip-off from members of the area community policing.

He had reportedly gone into hiding after allegedly committing the crime.

The arrest followed a report earlier made at Wamunyu police patrol base by a woman who claimed that her 16–year–old daughter had been defiled by the suspect. She made the report on February 26 at 9.36 pm.

Jerobon said according to the complainant, a resident of Mbaikini village, her daughter was attacked by the suspect at Muundani village while walking home from Wamunyu market, who took her to a nearby bush and defiled her.

The victim was later taken to Wamunyu Level 3 Hospital where she was treated and discharged in fair condition.

“Further investigations established that the victim who was born in 2005 as per the birth certificate was already above 18 years. Efforts to trace the suspect ensued leading to his arrest,” Jerobon told the Star.

Jerobon said the suspect was arrested by officers from Wamunyu police patrol base.

He is in lawful custody awaiting to be arraigned in court.

Area OCS has taken up the matter.
