Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment case will be heard in plenary after senators rejected the formation of an 11-member select committee to decide her fate.
Speaking after senators rejected the committee, Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the Senate would convene for the plenary hearing on Monday, August 19, and Tuesday, August 20, 2024, to hear the charges against the Meru Governor.
“The Senate shall investigate the matter in plenary on Monday the 19th of August and Tuesday the 20th of August 2024,” Kingi remarked.
He directed the clerk of the Senate to issue invitations to the parties involved to appear before the house noting that parties should file responses with the Office of the Clerk of the Senate by Saturday, August 17, 2024, by 5 pm.
Governor Mwangaza was impeached on August 8 over gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
A total of 49 out of 69 MCAs voted in favor of a motion seeking her removal from office while 17 voted no.
This will be the third time, Mwangaza will appear before the senate for an impeachment hearing.
